My year in books - 2015

It's part of my end of the year blog posts to write about the books that I read this year. Here's the 2014 and 2013 recaps if you are interested! At the beginning of the year I set a goal for the number of books that I'm going to read for the year. I set my goal for 35 this year, but only managed 29. I'm counting that 29 with pride though. I went weeks at a time without reading a book this year so I'm pretty impressed with completing 29 books. I track everything through Goodreads and couldn't recommend it more! So let's take a look at all these books ...

In no particular order here are my 5 favorites from the year:
  1. Better Than Before - Gretchen's books are some of my favorites and this one certainly didn't disappoint. I would make sure you've read her other books before reading this one. It will make more sense.
  2. The Rosie Project - I saw a lot of people reading this one and it didn't disappoint. The follow up is eually as good.
  3. The Fault in Our Stars - I'm probably the last person to read this, I haven't even watched the movie. But it was a winner and made me cry.
  4. Eat to Live - Dr. Joel's view on food is eye opening. The way he recommends eating makes a lot of sense. I'll be putting some of his suggestions in place in 2016.
  5. The Likeness - This is the second book that follows up to In The Woods. The first one had me hooked, but the second one has me waiting to read the third!

I also made a few bad choices this year, lots of really dumb chick lit that I read really fast but then couldn't remember what had even happened a week later.
  1. Killing Monica - I expected more from Candace Bushnell.
  2. Three Wishes - Another author that I normally love, but this title fell flat. Sorry, Liane Moriarty.
  3. Sex on Tuesdays - I was desperate for something to read, I wish I had picked something else.
  4. Torch - Apparently my idea of reading authors I know was a bad decision this year. Cheryl Strayed must have learned better story telling skills by the time she wrote Wild.
So if I'm going to continue going strong with my goal of 30 books for 2016 I need suggestions!! What should I read? Any favorites I'm missing out on?

Meal Plan Week #52

Oh hey it's Tuesday and I'm just getting around to posting the meal plan for this week. We returned from our vacation in NC on Saturday night. Hosted Christmas for the husband's side of the family on Sunday. And then I proceeded to get a HUGE sinus infection on Sunday afternoon which had me in bed by 6:15pm. The weather was uncooperative on Monday with freezing rain and gusty winds so a trip to the grocery store was out of the question. That brings us to today, Tuesday. Where I will finally be making a trip to the grocery store. Which means we can finally eat some food in our house!

MONDAY: Ravioli
I bought 2 different kinds a couple of weeks ago when we had ravioli, so there was enough left over to have it again. Yeah for frozen pasta!

TUESDAY: Tacos
Because duh, it's Taco Tuesday.

WEDNESDAY: Breakfast
I'm aiming for easy this week so breakfast for dinner is a sure winner!

THURSDAY: Quesadillas
This is a special request from the kids who apparently didn't eat enough Mexican food while we were gone last week.

FRIDAY: Homemade Pizza
Everything will be closed, so I'll have all day to make the dough from scratch and let everyone help out with the toppings.

So that's it folks! 52 weeks of meal planning. I successfully meal planned every week of the entire year. I wish I set that as a goal for the year! Meal planning without a doubt will continue for next year. And I'll be trying my best to include 1 meat free meal each week. I received the Thug Kitchen cookbook for Christmas so we will be trying out some new meals!

Meal Plan Week #51

We are visiting North Carolina this week so our meal plan is whatever my Dad decides to feed us :) But I didn't want to leave you hanging so here's a few ideas for you to try out this week!

Baked Stuffed Tacos are always a winner at our house!

Crock Pot Lasagna is super easy compared to the traditional oven version. And you can sneak in a bunch of veggies without your kids (or husband!) knowing.

I'm a sucker for anything mini-sized, like these Chicken Pot Pie Cupcakes!

Don't forget dessert! These cupcakes are perfect for the holidays ... Caramel Hot Chocolate Cupcakes

From our family to yours ... Merry Christmas!

Meal Plan Week #50 + a few extras

Holy moly - it's almost Christmas! I feel like I am completely overwhelmed with everything going on. Holiday parties for work, for school, for our families. Every day is party! Well not quite, but it's beginning to feel that way. Saturday we hosted our 3rd Ugly Sweater Party and white elephant exchange with our friends and families. It was a good time had by all.
Oh aren't we cute? And yes my nose had flashing lights. It was pretty awesome :) This Friday I'm in charge of the 3rd grade holiday party at school. I found some fun ideas on Pinterest - because duh where else would I come up with these genius ideas?! So I have been assembling goodie bags and making print outs and finding jokes that 3rd graders will think are hysterical. It will be a good time.

Next week we are taking off to North Carolina to spend Christmas with my Dad & step mom. I'm not sure the last time we visited their house - well actually we haven't been to the house since they moved in almost 4 years ago. Whoops! So we figured it was time for a visit. That means packing not only clothes and entertainment for the trip but also all the Christmas presents. And somehow remembering to not forget the ones from Santa!

All of that craziness takes us into the meal plan for this week. It's not exciting, but it's one less thing I have to worry about each night.

MONDAY: Grilled Cheese & Tomato Soup
Special request from the kids for this week

TUESDAY: Fajitas
I can't remember the last time I made fajitas! Taco Tuesday is getting an upgrade this week :)

WEDNESDAY: Dinner on the Go
I hate to do this, but with all the craziness that is going on this week plus the last swim lesson of the session for J - I can't think ahead enough to find a crock pot recipe for dinner. So I'll pick up something on my way home.

THURSDAY: Ravioli
Another special request from the kids this week

FRIDAY: YOYO / Clean Out The Fridge
Since we are headed out of town we'll clean out the fridge to get prepared.

Meal Plan Week #49

Wow I can't believe 2015 is almost over. My meal plans are all about simplicity this time of year as there is so much going on! Let's just get into it ...

MONDAY: Pancakes and Fruit
Special request from the kids to do breakfast for dinner.

TUESDAY: Taco in a Bag

WEDNESDAY: Chicken Tortilla Soup
This one has been on my list to make for awhile now, none of Peas & Crayons recipes ever disappoint so I'm sure this will be a winner.

THURSDAY: Sandwiches and Veggies

FRIDAY: Holiday Parties / Grandma's House
My husband and I both have our holiday work parties tonight so we'll have plenty to eat. The girls will be spending the evening with Grandma.

What's for dinner at your house this week? Any new recipes I should try?

Meal Plan Week #48

Things are crazy busy with Christmas shopping and wrapping. We are still doing swimming and there's still homework to be had during the week. Yeah for meal plans to keep us on track!

MONDAY: Turkey Tetrazzini
If my family doesn't mutiny over more turkey, we'll use up the leftover turkey from Thanksgiving for tonight's meal!

TUESDAY: Nachos
We restocked on our favorite tortilla chips from Costco so nachos are in order!
  WEDNESDAY: Pot Roast
I went a little overboard with mashed potatoes at Thanksgiving so we'll serve the leftovers with the pot roast.

THURSDAY: Chili and Grilled Cheese
It's cold enough outside that chili fits perfectly onto the menu. We started serving ours with grilled cheese on the side, yum!

FRIDAY: YOYO
We'll either go out for dinner or everyone can fend for themselves :) I'll need a break after a long week of cooking!

What's for dinner tonight at your house?

Meal Plan Week #47

It's Thanksgiving week! I'll be cooking/hosting a small Thanksgiving dinner this year and afterwards I will head out Black Friday shopping. This week's meal plan is pretty basic as I didn't want anything too complex.

MONDAY: Mini Pizzas
I'll make the dough on Sunday night, then we can assemble personal sized pizzas for dinner.

TUESDAY: Dinner Out or Order In
The girls are going to do a sleepover with cousins because they are off school the rest of the week so the husband and I are going to have a little mid-week date night :)

WEDNESDAY: Spaghetti w/Garlic Bread
I actually have a crock pot sauce with meatballs that will make this super easy! And J still has swimming tonight so quick and easy is always good.

THURSDAY: Turkey and all the trimmings!
I'll be making turkey, mashed potatoes, rolls and a cranberry pound cake dessert. The rest of the meal will come from my MIL and SIL.

FRIDAY: Leftovers
What's better than turkey leftovers?!

Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Shopping to everyone!

Meal Plan Week #46

I pulled together a last minute meal plan. Sunday was too nice to not be outside. 60* in Indiana in the middle of November is like crazy talk. We went to the park, walked the dog and didn't think about that this week will probably be cold, rainy and miserable. But you didn't come for the weather report, so here's our meal plan for the week.

MONDAY: Baked Potatoes
Since I did two slower cooker meals last week that involved meat we have lots of leftovers to top our potatoes with. My favorite is BBQ pulled pork or chicken over your potato with cheese and ranch. Yum!

TUESDAY: Chicken Taquitos
I've made these previously, they were pretty easy to whip up and are yummy!

WEDNESDAY: Paninis with veggies and fruit
It's swimming night so quick and easy is the plan here!

THURSDAY: YOYO
You're On Your Own. Mama is off duty, find some food and eat it. :)

FRIDAY: Pizza Pasta Bake
A pizza and a pasta bake all in one! You pretty much take anything you'd top your pizza with and put it in with the pasta. We like green peppers and onions and top it with pepperoni.

Monday, November 9, 2015

Meal Plan Week #45

We've got 2 crock pot meals and a meal that will be made ahead of time. It will make for an easy week of dinners! So let's get right to it ...

MONDAY: Vegetable soup with crusty bread
I made this Sunday so all I will have to do is heat it up for dinner.

TUESDAY: Pulled Pork Tacos
We'll use half the pork loin in the crock pot with a jar of salsa tonight. Then tomorrow use the other half for a completely different meal.

WEDNESDAY: Shredded BBQ Sandwiches
Take the other half of your pork loin with a bottle of BBQ sauce and put in the crock pot. Super easy way to use up some meat that was on sale and gives you some variety in your meals.

THURSDAY: Grilled Cheese & Tomato Soup
This is easy enough for the husband to make while I'm having girls night with the ladies at work :) Beer & tacos - great way to break in the new girl at work!

FRIDAY: French Toast & Fruit Salad
I'm not a huge syrup fan, so I always serve our french toast with fresh fruit so I can top mine with fruit instead of syrup. Yum!

What's for dinner this week at your house?

Meal Plan Week #44

I think I've made a mistake by labeling each week of my meal plan based on the week of the year. 44 weeks! There are only 52 in the year! How did this happen??? It is hard to believe that the holidays are right around the corner. Swim lessons start for J this week (A is still on the wait list for swim and gymnastics) so that's another commitment once a week for this family. Since last week's meal plan wasn't super healthy, we're taking a new approach this week!

MONDAY: Deli Sandwiches w/ Fruit & Veggies

I'm trying to be better about serving fruit & veggies at dinner if many are not included in the main dish. We'll have a variety to go along side our sandwiches.

TUESDAY: Cheesy Enchilada Rice Skillet

Sometimes you have to switch up taco night with some other Mexican inspired dish.

WEDNESDAY: Sausage, Spinach & White Bean Soup

Swim night, so crock pot meals are pretty much my go-to. And the kids are crazy for ANYTHING with beans in it these days. I did break my crock pot lid last week, maybe this will be a good excuse for Santa to put one under my tree :)

THURSDAY: Tortellini w/ Garlic Bread & Salad

FRIDAY: Chicken Patty Sandwiches

We'll see what veggies and fruits are leftover to pair with these sandwiches at the end of the week.

Meal Plan Week #43

The last week of October is here - how in the world did that happen so fast? But this also means my favorite day is at the end of the week ... Halloween! The girls have their costumes all ready (cheerleader and mermaid) so we are ready for the trick or treating and the awesome decorations. We also carved our pumpkins on Sunday. I just find Halloween so much fun!
I won't call this week's meal plan the healthiest one we've ever had, but everything is guaranteed to get eaten. I did throw in a healthy meal towards the end of the week to help combat the onslaught of candy that will be coming our way :)

MONDAY: Daddy's Choice
I will be out of town for work so Daddy's in charge of dinner. Let's be honest, they will probably eat cereal or order a pizza - haha!

TUESDAY: Baked Tacos
We had to shift a few things around last week and didn't end up making these tacos, we'll put them on the menu for this week!

WEDNESDAY: Ramen Noodles - A's choice
Since Daddy gets a choice, the girls decided they needed a choice too. I'm not a ramen eater so maybe I'll just have leftover tacos :)

THURSDAY: Chicken & Quinoa Soup
I have been looking for a way to use up some of the quinoa I bought when I made this chicken enchilada recipe. This one sounds and looks pretty good, plus it goes in the crock pot which is always my favorite way to make dinner!

FRIDAY: Mac & Cheese - J's choice
I think the only reason she didn't choose spaghetti was because we had it last week. I have a pan of Stouffer's mac & cheese that I'll cook up since the adults aren't fans of the glowing macaroni out of the box :)

Are you excited for Halloween? What's for dinner at your house this week?

Meal Plan Week #42

The weather is playing tricks on me. Last week it was very fall weather (and just down right cold some mornings) and now this week we could be back into the 70s. I won't complain, last year we went trick or treating in the snow. It would be nice to not have to do that again!

MONDAY: Baked Potatoes
Maybe we'll try some of these ideas to switch it up a bit!

TUESDAY: 3 Bean Taco Soup
We are playing bingo at school night, so this soup will be waiting in the crock pot for us to have a quick dinner beforehand.

WEDNESDAY: Spaghetti w/ Garlic Bread

THURSDAY: Pizza or Ravioli
Parents are having a frozen pizza, the kids are having canned ravioli - we are fancy!

FRIDAY: Baked Tacos
Yes 2 Mexican dishes in the same week, we must be a wild bunch!

Monday, October 12, 2015

Meal Plan Week #41

Another week, another meal plan. Nothing too crazy happening this week that I need to make the meal plan work around so we picked some delicious sounding meals for the week.

MONDAY: Ham & Corn Casserole
This is a slow cooker meal that I came across in a new cookbook. I've had leftover cubed ham in the freezer for awhile, so I'm happy to find a new recipe to use it up!

TUESDAY: Nachos
We picked up some tomatoes and onion at the farmer's stand down from our house when we were picking out pumpkins this weekend so I'm going to make some salsa to go along with our nachos.

WEDNESDAY: Stuffed Shells
I'm going to make these up on Sunday in double batch so that I can freeze one for later.

THURSDAY: Breakfast
I normally make a big breakfast on either Saturday or Sunday. I didn't do that this week so I'll make it up for it by doing it for dinner.

FRIDAY: Chicken Kebabs w/ Corn on the Cob
Awhile back I got a really good deal on corn on the cob so I froze a bunch. J was asking for corn this week, so we can pull a pack out of the freezer for dinner. And I'm all about the last chance to use the grill for the year :)

September Ipsy Bag Review

I was pretty happy with my first Ipsy bag so I decided to try out a second one. This month's bag was gold which was super cute. Here's a rundown of what was inside ...

City Chic Lipstick by City Color Cosmetics
5/5 stars
Lipstick is not something I usually buy. I'm more of a lip gloss kinda girl. But I loved this lipstick! The color was perfect and it stayed on pretty well. I've been wearing this almost every day since I got it!

Queen of the Fill Tinted Brow Gel by Elizabeth Mott
1/5 stars
I'm thinking maybe this product is for someone who is lacking eyebrows. I however do not have that issue. I tried it out anyways but I was constantly itching my eyebrows and getting the gel all over my fingers through the day. I didn't even notice any difference in the way my eyebrows looked. Not a winner for me.

ipsy Eye Shadow Trio by NYX Cosmetics
4/5 stars
Eye shadow isn't an every day item for me. But this trio is a winner! The color palette is perfect and will be nice for special occasions.

Ultra Repair® Cream by First Aid Beauty
5/5 stars
As much as I don't want to admit it, the cold weather is right around the corner. This cream can be used on your face or your feet so it will keep you hydrated. I will probably keep this in my desk drawer at work to use throughout the winter.

Aceite de Argan by Octavio Molina Hair
1/5 stars
Well I guess on my last survey when I said that the product left my hair greasy they thought I needed some more grease. Oil on my hair is about the last thing I need. If you have dry or frizzy hair this would probably be perfect for you.

So what would you like to try from the bag I got? Are you already an Ipsy member? Click here to join!
My plan is to get one more bag and then take a little break from the Ipsy bags over the holidays and start back up again in the Spring.

Meal Plan Week #40

With the weather feeling a LOT like fall around here I've been on the search for awesome slow cooker and soup/stew recipes for this fall. If you have any suggestions on what we should try out, please let me know!

MONDAY: Ravioli with Garlic Bread

TUESDAY: Bean Burritos
We'll do this burrito bar style - put everything out and each person assembles their own!

WEDNESDAY: Beef Stroganoff with Broccoli
I have a freezer to crock pot meal from a couple months ago that I'll throw together in the morning and cook the noodles the day before. I have a reading group meeting to attend at school for J tonight, so quick & easy is most important here.

THURSDAY: YOYO
You're On Your Own - find something and eat it :)

FRIDAY: Pizza & Salad
Frozen pizza and an easy salad will be a nice way to end the week!

Monday, September 28, 2015

Meal Plan Week #39

I'm in the mood for fall foods and I think this week's meal plan reflects that. This however doesn't mean that I'm in the mood for fall. I love summer and am sad to see the warm weather disappear. Let's just get right into it ...

MONDAY: Beef Stew
This is the best beef stew recipe I've tried, the whole family loved it the last time I made it. Do yourself a favor and make this!

TUESDAY: Tacos
Duh - Taco Tuesday ... need I say more?

WEDNESDAY: Grilled Cheese & Tomato Soup
One of the most requested meals at our house.

THURSDAY: Southwest Fiesta Chicken
This just looks yummy and easy!

FRIDAY: Dinner Out!
My mom is in town and Thursday is her birthday so we'll let her pick the restaurant to celebrate.

Monday, September 21, 2015

Meal Plan Week #38

The easier the dinners, the better this week. I'm preparing for a super busy week so I'll be sticking to this easy meal plan every night.

MONDAY: Pizza Pasta Bake
I'll assemble this bake on Sunday night and then bake when I get off work for a quick and easy dinner.

TUESDAY: Taco Soup
I've been curious about this recipe since I pinned it, I hope it's delicious!

WEDNESDAY: Breakfast for Dinner
Eggs, waffles, cereal ... if you'd eat it for breakfast you can eat it for dinner!

THURSDAY: Leftovers / Clean Out The Fridge

FRIDAY: Homemade Pizza
We'll probably do 2 pizzas, one for kids and one for adults that way everyone is happy.

Meal Plan Week #37

Things have been crazy busy lately. School is in full swing, work is busier than ever, the endless piles of stuff around the house don't seem to disappear for long. Meal planning means I have 1 less thing to worry about every night and that makes me happy!

MONDAY: Meatloaf and Mashed Potatoes
The weather is a little cooler for the beginning of the week and this is one of our fall/winter favorites. I'll make mini meatloaves in a cupcake pan so that they cook quickly.

TUESDAY: Quesadillas

WEDNESDAY: YOYO
You're On Your Own - it's a free for all tonight. Find something and eat it. I'm taking the night off cooking :)

THURSDAY: Grilled Stuffed Chicken Italiano
I already have everything I need on hand for this recipe and the weather should be back into the 80s for grilling :)

FRIDAY: Burgers with Fruit Salad
Burgers on the grill - I found a recipe to put a ranch packet and shredded cheese in your meat and then grill so I think I'll give it a try!

Monday, September 7, 2015

Meal Plan Week #36

We had an awesome trip to Niagara Falls over the long weekend. I sure do love the 3 days of all play and no work! :) You can check out some of our pictures over on Instagram. Now it's back to reality and meal planning ...

MONDAY: White Chicken Chili
Yes I know this was on last week's meal plan, and last week I put everything in the crock pot and came home to realize that I never turned it on. I was so bummed out that I decided to try again!

TUESDAY: Taco Salad

WEDNESDAY: Mac & Cheese for the kids
This was a request from J - I'm not sure what that means for the adults, as we aren't fans of the boxed mac & cheese :)

THURSDAY: Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup

FRIDAY: Tacos in a Bag
This was a special request from A - she wanted to go out for these, but I told her we could make them at home!

August Ipsy Bag Review

I treated myself to a birthday present this year and got an Ipsy bag. For just $10 I was able to get a bag with 5 products for me to try out. I'm not a huge makeup wearer, but I do love nail polish, hair products and lotions/potions. Here's a look at what I got!

Doucce - Ultra Precision Eye Liner in Black

4/5
This eyeliner was great. It went on smoothly and had a nice deep black color which I loved. My only complaint is my typical eyeliner has a smudger (is that a word?) on the other end so I can blend the color easier so I don't end up with a harsh line along my lashes.

Briogeo - Blossom & Bloom ™ Ginseng + Biotin Volumizer

2/5
I wasn't impressed. This volumizer left my hair feeling greasy and didn't provide hardly any volume. The smell and application technique was fine but I certainly wouldn't purchase this on my own.

Hikari Cosmetics - Lip Gloss in Salsa

4/5
This is not a color of lip gloss I would've normally purchased but I loved the way it looked once it was on. My only complaint is that it was quite goopy (my descriptive words are on point today) and almost left a stain on my lips once it wore off. This meant I had to keep reapplying all morning as the majority of it ended up on my coffee cup.

OZ Naturals - Amino Herbal Hydration Mask

5/5
If you are looking for some extra hydration this winter I would highly recommend this mask. It's easy to apply and works great. I will be using this daily or weekly come this winter when my skin really dries out.

Trust Fund Beauty - Nail Polish in Elegantly Wasted

5/5
This vegan, cruelty-free nail polish was awesome. The coverage was way better than I expected and I remained pretty much chip-free for a week. The light purple/lavender color wouldn't have been my pick but they have a bunch of other options that I would buy!

Have you ever tried a monthly subscription like this? Want to try Ipsy? If you sign up through my link I get 250 bonus points that I can use towards products in addition to my bag. So thanks in advance if you do that. I can't wait to see what I get next month!

Meal Plan Week #35

MONDAY: Mini Lasagna Cups
Lasagna is so time consuming, these cups look fun and easy! I've done a taco version before that the family liked so hopefully everyone also likes the lasagna ones.

TUESDAY: Tacos

WEDNESDAY: White Chicken Chili
Even though this week is going to feel like Summer again, I've been craving some white chili. Crock pot recipes are my fave!

THURSDAY: Sandwiches, Veggies, Chips
They are predicting 90* weather for the end of the week so we'll keep it simple with sandwiches.

FRIDAY: Who Knows?!
We will probably be heading out of town for the weekend so dinner may be on the road or leftovers if we don't decide to leave until Saturday morning.
